Chapter Fourteen: Reed

About one minute after Daisy excused herself from the dance floor, it occurred to me that letting her walk away was not the correct response to the situation. She seemed troubled by something. Plus, the ladies room was on the other side of the building. If she got lost, she was going to end up being cornered by one of my overeager relatives. From a contractual standpoint, it wasn’t fair of me to leave her to fend for herself in that situation.

I headed off in the direction she’d disappeared, sidestepping an incoming distant relative as politely as I could manage. I’d been to this venue a handful of times before for various other galas and fundraisers over the years, so I knew it well.

She was harder to find than I thought. The back hallways were fairly empty—it was still too early in the evening for people to scatter outward from the main hub of the ballroom.

It wasn’t until I heard the familiar sound of my cousin’s voice that I had any indication of Daisy’s location.

“—still in love with you and it’s ruining my life!” Marina shouted.

I stopped short before turning the corner. It sounded as if she’d been crying. While she was family, I wasn’t interested in offering her any kind of emotional support. She’d sooner see me suffer for her own sake, so I didn’t feel guilty about such sentiments.

Stiletto heels clicked rapidly in the opposite direction of where I stood, signaling that Marina had run away immediately following her outburst. I had no idea who she was yelling at, but the next person to speak clued me in on exactly what was going on.

“Why aren’t you going after her, Aiden?” Daisy asked.

Aiden Plourde. Her ex-boyfriend and fellow Yale alum. We’d met briefly at my grandmother’s wake and he had made it very clear that he was an admirer of my financial success. It shocked me that someone who had once fallen in love with Daisy could also be interested in someone like Marina, but from what Daisy had said about their relationship, he wasn’t a great guy to begin with.

“Why would I?” Aiden scoffed. “I’m assuming you heard her in there. She’s a fraud. I don’t think I can do this anymore.”

Marina was a fraud at heart, but I suppose I couldn’t judge too harshly given my current situation.

“Why would she say that to me? Why would she think that—that you—is this why you called me last week?”

I quirked an eyebrow, eavesdropping like a schoolboy as I dared to creep a few steps closer. At the mention of Daisy’s ex-boyfriend calling her recently, I felt a sharp flare of annoyance. Not so much because she never mentioned it to me, but because the type of man who dated one girl while secretly contacting his ex was not someone I wanted near any woman I cared about.

“Daisy, if you’d just let me talk to you. I know you’re engaged, but—”

I’d heard about enough at that point. I
